The technologist

Successful beers start with top-class raw materials and are created through professional and expert brewing. The fact that I have the necessary scientific background and technical expertise to follow this process is what makes my work my passion!
After fine-tuning the recipes, adjusting the system settings and analysing the raw material properties, it gives me a great sense of satisfaction to see the end result in the beer glass – and to taste it, of course ;-)

The flavour junkie

As a graduate in brewing science, I have long held a passion for beer as a cultural asset. In my work, I am responsible for our customers in Austria, as well as for several small and medium-sized breweries in Germany. I find it incredibly enjoyable witnessing the development of beer diversity first hand.
The best thing about passion is being able to share it – in my case with our customers!

The man with the green fingers

In my operational area, which lies directly at the heart of the Hallertau in Bavaria, Germany, I am responsible for around 100 farming families who grow the unique speciality crop that is hops. My area of expertise is “hop varieties and breeds”.
We don’t simply buy finished products – my colleagues and I support our growers so that when we hold a hop in our hands at the end of the year, we know exactly what it has been through during the whole year and who produced it. That is my passion.

The next generation

Even when I was still studying brewing science, I always dreamed of one day being able to work with the global market leader in hop services. I worked really hard to achieve my dream, and my dedication was rewarded by the BARTH-HAAS GROUP: I was given the chance to prove myself as a student trainee. And now, as a young professional in the BARTH-HAAS GROUP trainee programme, I get to see passion for hops and beer in practice and experience how it can be passed on to the next generation!

Our quality claim

The highest standards for the best hops: we do not settle for anything less. To live up to this claim, the BARTH-HAAS GROUP has introduced an extensive quality management system (QMS) based on the established ISO 9001:2008 standard. It also encompasses the international HACCP guidelines, which ensure continuous improvement in quality and safety. Successfully established results of these efforts are reflected in the BARTH-HAAS guarantee or the BARTH-HAAS quality control guarantee, for example.

Quality management system

With our extensive quality management system (QMS), we want to ensure the highest customer satisfaction at all times. To achieve this goal, the processes and manufacturing procedures within the BARTH-HAAS GROUP are constantly reviewed in order to continuously improve the quality of our products and services. The QMS meets all the requirements of ISO 9001:2008, the most widely used and important standard in quality management both nationally and internationally. Compliance with the conditions defined in this standard is ensured in the long term by means of regular re-certification audits by TÜV SÜD.

HACCP programmes have been developed and introduced at all company locations of the BARTH-HAAS GROUP. HACCP is an internationally recognised management system focused on the prevention of food-related safety problems. As an integral part of our ISO 9001 QMS, the HACCP programmes are also subject to regular audits and certification.

During the development of our HACCP programmes, all aspects of production were examined, from raw material procurement to storage and distribution of the end product. Tests were carried out to establish whether a hop product is liable to a naturally occurring or process-induced safety hazard. Safety hazards can be, for example, the biological (principally microbiological), chemical and/or physical properties of a product that have the potential to injure or cause illness in the end user.

HACCP is used to identify existing or potential hazards and with its help a system is put in place to reduce the threat of risk in the end product. The development and implementation of HACCP programs is just another aspect of the BARTH-HAAS GROUP’s continuing commitment to supplying our customers with safe, high-quality hop products.

Our HACCP concept is oriented towards EU Regulation (EC) 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs and applies the HACCP principles in accordance with the Codex Alimentarius. HACCP is also a well recognised food safety program, especially in the United States. Further information can be found on the U.S. FDA website.

Product safety

The BARTH-HAAS GROUP is synonymous with top-class hop quality – quality that enjoys an excellent reputation among brewers around the world. Detailed knowledge of the plant protection products utilised in hop cultivation plays a major role in ruling out contamination and, in turn, contributes to the purity of the beer. Together with our growers, we ensure that the hops you use have been seamlessly checked. The specially developed BARTH-HAAS safety concept with its integrated early warning system ensures transparency and thus compliance with 100%-certified product quality.

The BARTH-HAAS safety concept is the most comprehensive screening programme in the industry

  • All hops and hop products obtained from us are combined as mixed samples in a standardised form and comprehensively analysed.
  • The hops are not released for processing and marketing until the results of the analysis are available.
  • Details of the routine approach and the specified range of active compounds can be viewed here.

Our early-warning system detects in advance what is wrong with any hops

  • The hops are tested for residues of plant protection agents prior to harvest using the BARTH-HAAS leaf programme.
  • Close cooperation and information exchange with the growers, as well as specialist advice from our knowledgeable purchasing experts, make early forecasting possible.
  • Instances of disease or infestation are observed, documented and corresponding measures developed through the regular BARTH-HAAS Hop Tour which visits selected hop gardens in all the European growing regions.

The highest standards: BARTH-HAAS Quality Management

  • The HACCP report is an integral component of our ISO 9001 quality management system.
  • The plant protection form, introduced by Joh. Barth & Sohn in 1994, has become the standard within the German hop industry and allows detailed documentation of the type, number and date of crop protection applications.
  • The plant protection calendar introduced by BARTH increases the reliability and comprehensiveness of documented plant protection measures exclusively for our growers and customers.

Traceability of all hop and product lots

  • Our IT system stores all the data and enables the hops to be correctly allocated to meet customer requirements.
  • This means that the grower lots in any given product batch can be easily traced.
  • The reference samples of all hop and product lots are retained for at least five years.

Quality control guarantee

*The BARTH-HAAS quality control guarantee refers to the comprehensive quality control measures and analysis of active compounds to which the BARTH-HAAS GROUP hops and hop products are subjected. It is not a guarantee of the 100% purity of these products. Details of the quality control programme can be found here:

The BARTH-HAAS quality control programme for European hops

  • Raw hops are combined as mixed samples, representing 25-30 tons of hops respectively..
  • Most samples are analysed for 87 active substances by the NATECO2 laboratory in Wolnzach, one of the world’s leading laboratories for residues of plant protection agents.
  • The NATECO2 standard is not exhaustive for all active substances that are authorised for hop farming in Europe. Those active substances not analysed by NATECO2 fall into two categories:
I: Suspicious active substances/active substances whose residue has proven to be problematic in some cases.
II: Active substances whose residue levels have never come close to established upper limits within the parameters of our long-standing research programme.
  • Based on current knowledge, no substance requires classification in Category I. Classification of approved active substances is reviewed annually.
  • As an additional check, at least 20 % of the aforementioned mixed samples are examined by the independent Eurofins SOFIA laboratory in Berlin. This procedure guarantees that at least all approved active substances (incl. Categories I and II cited above) are analysed.

The BARTH-HAAS quality control programme for hops from the USA

  • For pellet processing (T90/T45/Isopellets), raw hops are combined as mixed samples, representing 20-40 tons of hops respectively.
  • For CO2 extract or IKE processing , mixed samples from either raw hops or ready-made CO2 pellets are analysed for a volume ranging from 45 to 90 tons per batch.
  • Most samples are examined by the Pacific Agricultural Laboratory (PAL) in Portland, OR, USA.
  • The PAL standard is not exhaustive for all active substances that are authorised for hop farming in the USA. These active substances also fall into two categories:
I: Suspicious active substances/active substances whose residue has proven to be problematic in some cases.
II: Active substances whose residue levels have never come close to established upper limits within the parameters of our long-standing research programme.
  • Based on current knowledge, no substance requires classification in Category I. Classification of approved active substances is reviewed annually.
  • At least 20 % of the aforementioned mixed samples are examined by other independent laboratories, in order to cover at least all the active substances approved in the USA (including Categories I and II).

The BARTH-HAAS quality control programme for hops from Australia

  • Every sample is drawn either from bales or taken directly from the drying floor and each represents 40 tons of raw hops.
  • The samples are analysed at an external laboratory, „Agrifood Technology” in Werribee, Victoria, Australia.
  • Agrifood analyses a total of 336 active ingredients, which covers all the plant protection agents used in hops and in adjacent crops.

The BARTH-HAAS quality control programme for hops from other growing regions

  • In this instance, mixed samples of either raw hops or products are analysed for a max. volume of 30 tons per batch.
  • All samples are examined at one of the laboratories named above.

The BARTH-HAAS quality control programme for Advanced Products

  • For the entire stock of Advanced Products, analyses are performed for every product type using representative product samples. Since July 2013, products have either been produced from tested raw hops or are themselves subject to inspections. Products that are produced from untested stock are also subject to random checks.
  • With Advanced Products, raw hops or ready-made CO2 pellets are analysed for volumes ranging from 45 to 90 tons per batch. The analyses are performed by one of the laboratories named above.

Validity of the BARTH-HAAS quality control guarantee

  • The BARTH-HAAS quality control guarantee is valid for hops and hop products that have been produced by the following members of the BARTH-HAAS GROUP:
Joh. Barth & Sohn GmbH & Co. KG: since crop year 2012
BARTH-HAAS UK Ltd.: since crop year 2013
John I. Haas Inc.: since crop year 2013
Hop Products Australia: since crop year 2014
Simply Hops Ltd.: since crop year 2014
  • It is standard for raw hops to be allocated and released for processing only after the analysis results are available. If this is not possible in exceptional cases, mixed samples from the finished product, each representing not more than 30mt, are tested in accordance with the NATECO2 standard.

Research & Innovation

We research
Research all along the supply chain
We do everything we can to understand the influence of hops on beer. Our research into this is done in laboratories with excellent staff and equipment in Europe (Paddock Wood, UK) and the USA (Yakima, WA). We also breed new hop varieties, evaluate their aromatic effect, assess the utilisation of the hops in the brewing process and investigate the best production conditions – and much more. Partnerships with numerous universities and research centres are a key element in our efforts, allowing us to reveal and exploit the full potential of hops.

We experiment
Optimum use of hops
We perform brewing trials in the company’s own experimental breweries, in order to find the solutions and answers that our customers are looking for. With the help of these experimental breweries, we can investigate the effects of hops in the brewing process and thus support our customers with appropriate usage recommendations and recipes.

We are innovative
Innovation from passion
For over 200 years, we have been setting standards in hops innovation, and we continue to be driven by this innovative strength. Our expertise, the findings from our two research centres and the knowledge we gain in our experimental breweries provide us with the competitive edge that allows us to identify new potential and possible applications and to be the first to implement them. From new hop varieties to new hop products and new applications for hops.
